Bode Locke, elementary school aged boy, begins exploring Key House as a ghost. He tries to convince his family about the doorway that makes you a ghost, but no one believes him. While exploring, Bode goes to the well-house and hears a woman's voice call his name. She is his echo, and wants to be his friend. Bode tries to befriend the woman in the well, giving her things she requests. In prison, Sam Lesser, hears again from the woman in the well, in this case, his toilet. He discovers rising in the water, some of the things Bode Locke had given her.
