The time that Roland and his companions have spent in Hambry has been very illuminating. While the folk praise the Affiliation, they are lied to at almost every turn about the available number of horses. But when the three Gunslingers discover hidden oil tankers, the only use they can come up with for them is to supply John Farsons engines of war. Realizing that Farson will come soon for the oil, the three begin making plans to engage him.But they have other dangers of which they don't know. Roy Depape is backtracking their trail into Hambry and the command of Jonas Eldred. When he finds word of three young lords, likely gunslingers who passed the small town of Ritzy, he hurries back to warn the Big Coffin Hunters of their quarry.
